About MAC Addresses

What is a MAC Address?

A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller (NIC). It is used at the data link layer of a network segment and consists of 6 bytes (48 bits).

OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier)

The first 3 bytes of a MAC address form the OUI, which identifies the manufacturer or vendor of the network device. OUIs are assigned by the IEEE Registration Authority.

MAC Address Formats

MAC addresses can be written in several formats: colon-separated (AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF), hyphen-separated (AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF), dot-separated in groups of four (AABB.CCDD.EEFF), or as a plain string (AABBCCDDEEFF).

Privacy Considerations

Modern devices often use MAC address randomization for privacy protection. This means the MAC address broadcast during Wi-Fi scanning may differ from the actual hardware address to prevent tracking.
